The People Walking in the Dark

Isaiah wrote these words into a world that knew darkness, fear, oppression, and waiting. And how long that waiting must have seemed! Then suddenly comes this astonishing promise: "The people walking in darkness have seen a great light."
And the answer to all that darkness is…
A child.
That contrast is what Christmas is all about. God does not answer the world's fear with a bigger army or a stronger earthly ruler. He gives us a child. Yet on this child's shoulders, the government rests. He comes in humility, yet His kingdom has no end. He enters a shadowed world as an infant, yet he bears names no ordinary child could carry: Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
The refrain comes from that central image:
"On us His light has now begun; The reign of peace is Christ the Son."
Isaiah's promise does not merely describe a brighter future somewhere far away. In Christ, the Light has already entered the darkness. The promised King has come. The yoke is broken. The reign of peace has begun.
We still see plenty of darkness around us. But Christmas announces that darkness no longer gets the final word.
